Agar Art demonstrates how bacteria can be used to express different colored proteins. Students use agar plates and different bacterial cultures to “paint” artwork on an agar plate. The following day, BTC Institute staff will photograph the bacterial art and send the results to the participants in 1-3 business days (depending on time of field trip, plates may need to incubate longer). Typical colors available are pink, orange, yellow, yellow-lime, blue, purple.

This field trip is categorized as an Introductory field trip, and is appropriate for students as young as 6th or 7th grade. It can be adapted in depth of content to be appropriate for science learners at a more advanced level.
