Genetic Transformation & Bioluminescence uses click beetle luciferase to demonstrate the transfer of a gene into cells of another species. After a 30-minute slide show about bioluminescence, students go into the laboratory to perform a simulated genetic transformation, which transfers the luciferase gene, and the ability to make bioluminescent light, into bacterial cells.
Key Topics:
- Bioluminescence
- DNA and Genetic Transformation
- Bacterial Culture and Sterile Technique
This field trip can be taken On the Road with additional fees, given the following:
- Field trip can be held in a space away from food or drink is required, preferably without carpet.
- Access to a room or space that can be made completely dark (classroom with light-blocking curtains, storage room without windows, etc.) to view bioluminescence.
This field trip is categorized as an Introductory field trip, and is appropriate for students as young as 6th or 7th grade. It can be adapted in depth of content to be appropriate for science learners at a more advanced level.
Length of Field Trip: 1.5 to 2 hours (can be shortened, contact us for details)
Cost of Field Trip: $144 for up to 16 students; $9 for every additional student.
