Week 6 Activities

Space Workout

 

 

Materials: Internet; open space; water to drink
Activity Description: Do the space-themed fitness activities with this video (~6:45). You can read through the workout beforehand here. Then, come up with three of your own space-themed exercises!
Submission details: Email, call, or text your workout exercises to Ms. Holmes. Send a video if you have the capabilities!

UV Radiation Shield
(In Mission Pack!)

Materials: Internet; printer; a sunny day; 20 UV beads; the following materials are provided in the mission pack to go along with the worksheet. If you are doing this activity without a mission pack, you are welcome to use other materials you have around the house: 2 zip close plastic bags, 2 paper cups, 2 clear plastic cups, 2 colored plastic cups, 2 rubber bands or tape (optional), 2 Styrofoam cups, 1 piece of cotton fabric, 1 square of colored cellophane, 1 square of aluminum fabric, 1 paper envelope, 1 paper bag, 3 pipe cleaners (optional to make a bracelet or window art with the UV beads after activity).
Activity Description: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can hard your skin and cause skin damage or cancer. On Earth, the atmosphere provides us some protection from UV radiation. When astronauts travel to space, they will no longer have that protection. In this activity, you will test different materials using this worksheet to see if they are a good UV radiation shield using the sun and UV sensitive beads.

Week 5 Activities

Build a Satellite
(In Mission Pack!)

 

Materials: A wide variety of materials that vary in size, shape and color – examples include but are not limited to: small cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, chopsticks, plastic containers/lids, buttons, pompoms; tape or glue; internet; printer (optional)
Activity Description: Create a model of a satellite that will explore the Moon or Mars following these guidelines. Once completed, answer this activity worksheet. A video overview of this activity is available here (~4:00).
Submission details: Email or text a photo of your satellite AND the activity worksheet answers to Ms. Holmes.

STEM Professionals 2

Materials: Internet; paper (~8.5×11 at least) and coloring utensils OR computer drawing program
Activity Description: Learn about the following STEM professionals. Pick one professional to create a poster for that includes at least FIVE facts and ONE picture. (Challenge – conduct your own research on your chosen professional!)

week 4 activities

Artemis Activity Book
(in Mission Pack!)

 

 

Materials: Internet; printer; Activity Book; colored pencils
Activity Description: You are encouraged to complete every activity in this book, but we understand some are more challenging than others. Work through this activity on your own, though you can work with others if you get stuck. (Ideal printer settings for the booklet is: Print both sides, flip on short edge, 2 pages per sheet. Once printed, fold in half and staple in the middle.)

Perseverance rover game

 

Materials: Internet (not through a mobile device)
Activity Description: Using a sequence of commands, you will drive Perseverance, the Mars rover scheduled to launch July 2020, to collect information about Martian rocks and send the information back to scientists on Earth. You will have 8 expeditions to try to collect information in the form of research points. Plan to play the game at least twice to try to get as many research points as you can!
Submission details: Email or text a photo of your “Mission Completed” screen with research points to Ms. Holmes.

week 3 activities

Moon Phase Tracker

 

 

Materials: Internet; paper; pencil; coloring utensils (optional); printer (optional)
Activity Description: Observe the moon for two weeks and record your observations of the moon phase each day. Watch Ms. Holmes’s video (~4:30) for ideas on how to making a moon phase tracker or use your own unique method.

Activity Description: Watch Ms. Holmes’s video (~4:00) on the Artemis Mission identity. Design your own Artemis mission patch with this worksheet.

Imagine You’re an astronaut


Materials
: Internet; online project guide; paper, pencil, eraser (optional if you can remember your ideas!)
Activity Description: Pick THREE of the everyday living activities in this project guide (Exercise, Stay Clean, Make Time for Fun, etc.) and explain how you would do them if you were living in space, like on Gateway. You can work on this activity with other CL participants or people in your household!

Week 1 Activities

Artemis Program Videos

 

 

Materials: Internet; writing utensil & paper OR computer to type answers (optional)
Activity Description: Watch the 3 short NASA videos “We Go, (~1:00)” “We Are Going,(~4:00)” and “How We Are Going to the Moon (~6:00)” on the Artemis Program and answer these questions.

Draw Artemis

Materials: Internet; drawing guide; paper, pencil, eraser, pen, coloring utensils OR computer drawing program
Activity Description: Pick ONE of four tutorials to draw and color on your own:
Mobile Launcher – Steel structure to support the Space Launch System
Orion Spacecraft – Designed for space transport of humans
Orion Spacesuit – The spacesuits astronauts will wear on Orion to the Moon
Space Launch System Rocket – World’s most powerful rocket to launch Orion into space
